NC State head coach Tom O'Brien announced today that Mira Costa (CA) kicker Billy Bennett will not transfer to NC State. O'Brien stated that Bennett withdrew his application for personal reasons.
Originally a member of the 2007 class, Bennett was generally regarded as the top kicker in the country when he signed with Boston College. He spent two years at the school but was suspended for a violation of team rules during his sophomore year. He mostly handled kickoffs during his time at BC and never attempted a field goal.
He spent the 2009 season at Mira Costa College, a community college just minutes from his home, so he could transfer back to a Division I school. Because he did not play in 2009, he was expected to have two years left to play two seasons at NC State after accepting an offer from the Wolfpack.
According to sources close to the situation, Bennett will not be transferring to any Division I program and may no longer pursue a football career.
