Pack Offers Tampa Standout
Coaches, however, realize that special teams really are one-third of the game of football. They do not take anything for granted, however tempting that might be.
Field position, field goals, blocks, extra points, punt and kickoff returns -- all are things that decide on a weekly basis the fate of teams across the country. Special teams may be why Frankie Williams is a prospect worth keeping an eye on.
The 5-10, 170-pound wide receiver is a rising senior at Tampa (FL) Robinson and he had an outstanding year on offense. Williams caught 36 passes for more than 720 yards and 10 touchdowns. Defensively he recorded 30 tackles, three interceptions and a touchdown.
It's on special teams where he really left his mark. Williams scored an eye-popping seven special teams touchdowns in the fall of 2009 alone -- a remarkable statistic. Four of those touchdowns were on kickoff returns and three were on punt returns. College coaches are rightly enamored with a game changer, even if he never plays a down on offense or defense. In Williams' case, he could probably play on any of the three units.
The young man isn't lacking for confidence either. He recently told Pack Pride that he plans on making his decision "after (his) state championship run" this fall.
Williams isn't just a talented prospect. He's also a fan of college football. He visited FIU and FAU before his junior season but he hasn't been anywhere since. That will change this summer when he hopes to visit Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Clemson and perhaps a lot more schools.
While some of those schools may not be showing a lot of interest yet, others have. NC State, Iowa State and Washington State are three FBS schools that have offered scholarships, and NC State may be in the best position of those three.
"Washington State is just really far away," he admitted. "I like NC State because I have family in North and South Carolina. I'll be going up there this summer since my uncle lives up at the tip of South Carolina, right near North Carolina. I want to come up and visit NC State when I do that.
"If there's anybody else (he likes) it's Iowa State. I don't think I'll be able to visit them, though."
Williams said NC State's running backs coach Jason Swepson offered him a scholarship on Tuesday or Wednesday of last week.
