Clyburn Biding His Time

Clyburn Biding His Time

Pack Pride checks in with Statesville (NC) West Iredell safety P.J. Clyburn and finds out whether the senior defensive back still has NC State on his radar.

Though he's satisfied with the offers he has and told Pack Pride he isn't waiting for any other schools to come along, P.J. Clyburn is perfectly content to take his time and is refraining from narrowing his list.

The 6-1, 208-pound athlete from North Carolina has had a frustrating senior season so far at Statesville (NC) West Iredell.

"We're doing okay, but we're a real young team, you know, so it's pretty tough," he said. "We're 2-3, and some of the games have been close.

"I feel like I'm stepping up as a leader big-time. My season has been pretty frustrating. Kickoff returns and punts are mostly what I score on and they don't kick it to me. I play receiver, too, and we have a young quarterback and it's been hard for him to adjust. Teams are putting doubles on me, too.

"As far as defense goes the coaches have put me at free safety and strong safety. The coaches are having me do stuff that I'll be doing at the next level."

Despite the fact that most of his time is monopolized by everything associated with being a high school senior, Clyburn has managed to peak down the road just a bit and think about the future.

"I went down to East Carolina and watched them," he said. "It was pretty fun. It was a long ride but it was pretty fun ... a nice game. I've been talking to (North) Carolina, Kentucky, Arkansas, Illinois ... I don't know, I think other coaches are calling my coach. I'm not sure but I think Clemson called."

Has NC State spoken with him recently?

"No, I haven't talked to them recently. I think my coach might have talked to them."

Illinois, NC State, Arkansas, ECU, Kentucky, Western Carolina and Catawba have offered scholarships to Clyburn, and schools like South Carolina, North Carolina, Marshall, Purdue and others have shown interest recently. Clyburn has started to think about official visits lately.

"Yeah, I've been trying to plan that. I'm not sure which I'm going to. Me and my family need to sit down and think about it.

"I don't really have favorites. I'm looking at every Division I school. I'm just waiting for the right time. There's no specific date or time. I'm taking it day by day."
