Pack Set to Host Standout DL

NC State will host 3-star DL Bjoern Werner at tonight's game versus South Carolina. Pack Pride has the latest on Werner's recruitment and thoughts on the Wolfpack.

Bjoern Werner and his peers at the Salisbury School in Connecticut have yet to report for fall classes and the talented German defensive tackle is making the most of his time.

It's not often that you come across a native of Germany that is considered a top high school football recruit, nor do you think of Connecticut as a state that produces talented players. The 6-foot-4, 270-pound defensive tackle is probably used to hearing things like that by now, but he's also used to receiving a lot of attention from college coaches.

Werner holds offers from the likes of NC State, Boston College, Cal, Maryland, Oregon and Rutgers, among others.

He will be in Raleigh on Thursday night when the Pack kicks off their season against South Carolina. Instead of watching the game on ESPN, Werner wanted to get a taste for what life in Raleigh would be like.

"The NC State coaches asked my head coach if I would like to go down for it, and he told me," Werner told Pack Pride. "Football games are always nice. We still have summer break and school has not started yet. We start next week, so it's a good chance to watch a game."

Werner said NC State offered him about a month ago. He hasn't spoken to the coaches much, but he plans on doing plenty of that down the road.

"I think one of their coaches called (Tuesday) but I missed it," he said. "I'm interested in seeing everything. It will be my first time there."

Werner had scheduled official visits to Cal and Oregon but he had to postpone both trips, as he did not realize he couldn't take officials until after the start of his senior year. He said he definitely plans on going to those schools at some point, as well as at least one other.

"I think I'm going to Maryland on September 19," he said. "I'll be going to those three. I know that. I don't know what else I'll be doing. I have tried to make as many unofficial visits as possible."

Werner said he doesn't have any favorites yet, but that could change once he's able to compare the coaches recruiting him and the campuses of the schools he has heard from.
