Over the past couple of seasons Greensboro (NC) Dudley High School has one of the top defenses in the state, and a major reason why is standout linebacker Major Bryant.

In the past two seasons – both ending in state championships – Dudley's defense has allowed an average of just over a touchdown a game while shutting out eight opponents. After going 13-3 in 2007, the Panthers went undefeated last season, including a victory over football powerhouse Richmond High, which won the NCHSAA 4AA Title.

On film, Bryant's ability to play the game sticks out. The 6-foot, 215-pound linebacker started both years and is poised to have a big senior season after totaling 85 tackles, 13 tackles for a loss, eight QB pressures, seven sacks, and two interceptions in 2008.

[Major] brings a lot of experience," Dudley head coach Steven Davis previously stated. "He's definitely a leader and just a hard-nosed football player – and I think the guys follow his lead. We try to use his athletic ability and ability to make plays on the field all over and as much as possible."

"I'm ready for this year," said Bryant. "I think it's a big year for me because colleges are trying to see what I can do, and I think we're going to be real good again."

Bryant is on the recruiting radar for several teams. He's hearing from NC State and East Carolina and has landed scholarship offers from Marshall, Winston-Salem State, and North Carolina A&T.

The most recent offer came in from Marshall.

"That was a big offer for me because I think Marshall is a good school and they have a strong program," said Bryant. "I'm looking at them and want to get up there for a visit sometime. I think I'm going to visit in a few weeks."

One program that Bryant is very interested in is NC State. He took an unofficial visit in the spring and attended the final day of the Wolfpack's camp last week with teammate David Amerson.

"I had a great time at State," said Bryant. "I always do up there. I like the coaches a lot, especially coach Reed, my recruiting coach.

"I think I did good at the camp, but they haven't offered me yet. They said they like me, but I think they want to see film on my first two games so I'm going to send that to them."

Bryant hopes the Wolfpack will offer a scholarship.

"It would be great if they offered me," he stated. "I've talked with Dave about going to the same school and that's something we wouldn't mind doing. I know he likes NC State a lot too so it would be great if they offered me because they have already offered him.

"State is my leader. We went up to Raleigh a couple of weeks ago, and I got a a good feel of the place. We hung out with one of the players and saw the dorms, and they made us feel real comfortable."
