One of the hottest prospects in the state this spring has been Cary (NC) defensive end Fre'Shad Hunter. While excelling at combines and shipping out his junior film, Hunter has picked up several offers along the way.

"It started a little slow, but I've got a lot of offers now," said Hunter. "I now have an offer from [NC] State, East Carolina, LSU, Purdue, Syracuse, South Carolina, Tennessee, Florida State, Virginia Tech, and Oregon.

"It's exciting to have all these schools recruit me and come to my school. That just started... I really like that."

One of the first colleges to visit Hunter during the evaluation period was NC State, followed by visits from North Carolina, Virginia, and Wake Forest among others. The Wolfpack were the first to offer a scholarship and sent a group of coaches to Cary High looking to make a statement to Hunter. Apparently they did just that.

"State had four coaches come over and see me," said Hunter. "I was kind of at a loss for words. They just asked me questions about the recruiting process... looking to see when I'm going to make a decision. They told me how bad they want me, and they've got a spot for me over at NC State."

Last month Hunter attended the Wolfpack's spring game. What were his thoughts on the event?

"It was good," he said. "I went out there to check out the game and the thing that caught my attention was the fans. The stadium was packed. They had more fans than ECU, [North] Carolina, and Duke had combined. It was just a great atmosphere.

"I was definitely surprised by the turnout. If all those people showed up to see them play against each other, imagine what it's like when other teams go in there."

Regarded by most as a top-10 prospect in the state, Hunter totaled 38 tackles, six sacks, and eight tackles for a loss as a junior. Checking in at 6-foot-4 and 245-pounds, he recently ran a 4.79 40-yard dash and is explosive and physical coming off the edge.

He admits that he has a top four with one school sticking out.

"I'd have to say I have a top four of NC State, Florida, Florida State, and LSU," said Hunter. "[NC] State is still my No. 1 school. They were my first scholarship offer, and they are close to home.. .like five minutes from my house.

"That's a great school for my mom, she told me that, so State's my No. 1 school right now. She wants to keep me close to home... she said that's not really a factor, but she loves State a lot."

Don't expect a quick decision from Hunter, who plans to take some visits in the near future.

"I'm going to take about four visits this summer," he said. "I can't say which ones yet, I haven't talked to my mom, but it's going to be at least four over the summer.

"I sat down and talked to my coach about committing early. He told me that if I was to commit early he wants me to be a man of my word. He wouldn't want me to back out of my commitment... he wants me to be 100% sure when I decide so I'm going to make sure I know it's the place for me. As of now, I think it's going to be after my season."
