Durham (NC) Hillside defensive tackle Eric Young
had a feeling it was coming, but that didn't take away from the excitement he felt when NC State extended him a scholarship offer.
It is Young's first official offer.
"I've been talking to NC State a lot, and they came in with an offer today," he stated. "The coaches came by my school and they let it be known that they like the way I play.
"The coaches were saying they see me as a nose guard and they like how I can get around the field. They also like how I can find my way to the football."
Young made it over to Raleigh for an unofficial visit a couple of weeks back.
"I was at State for a spring practice," he said. "I liked it because it looked like their practices are organized and fun. They all seemed really prepared."
What does he like about the Wolfpack?
"I like NC State," said Young. "I like that they have a strong engineering program because that is what I want to go to school for. Plus, the coaches seemed to have a good relationship with the players."
While pleased to land his first offer, Young admits that he is wide open and in no hurry to make a decision. He's hearing from other programs such as East Carolina, Maryland, and North Carolina among others.
"I don't have a leader," he said. "I think I'm going to wait until after the summer camps to make a decision. I know we're going to camps at Maryland and NC State, and UNC wants me to come do a one-day camp.
"I'm just glad to know that I'll be going to college. My coach is excited for me because he's the new head coach and I'm the first of his players to really be recruited. My mom was also very excited because it shows how hard I've been working. I'm the oldest of four children so I really want to go to college and make something of myself... my little brother wants to play football and I want to set a good example for him."
Checking in at 6-foot-3 and 360 pounds, Young is a mammoth defensive tackle prospect capable of stuffing running lanes while also applying pressure on the quarterback.
"I try to play hard and make plays," he said. "I don't know my stats from last year, but I thought I had a good season.
