You could forgive quarterback Aaron Mershman if he appeared a little tired last week when he arrived at
NC State’s football camp. The rising senior was embarking on his 12th camp in less than two
months but if he wasn’t at his best, it didn’t show during his workout. Mershman put together a
solid performance in front of the Wolfpack coaches and solidified himself as a player for an offer
from State over the coming weeks.
Starring at Bowling Green (OH) High School, Mershman accounted for nearly 1,500 yards
passing and 16 touchdowns as a junior. He also added an additional 370 yards and three scores on
the ground. At 6-3, 200 pounds, Mershman has a nice frame and showed the ability to move well
during drills while working out for Wolfpack offensive coordinator Dana Bible. He consistently
delivered his throws accurately during an individual workout and was able to spend some one on
one time with coach Bible after camp had concluded. Mershman said he learned quite a bit from
the Pack’s OC.
“I really like coach Bible,” said Mershman. “He’s a good guy and there was a lot of things I
learned from him. He was working to try to get us out of our comfort zone when we were
throwing and I said something to coach Bridge about it and he said that’s exactly what he’s trying
With offers on the table from Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Bowling
Green, Akron and Ball State, Mershman did not hide the fact that he would love to add NC State
to his list.
“State didn’t offer but they did say I was high on their board,” he said. “I’m a guy they like and
I’m supposed to call in. I’m hoping something will come out of it but we’ll see.”
Mershman added that a chance to see all that NC State had to offer enhanced his interest in the
“I got to see the campus on Tuesday night and talked to the coaching staff on Wednesday,” he
said. “The field, just everything about that stadium is amazing. I was pretty knocked dead by it
and it was certainly above the MAC schools and a place I’d really like a chance to play.”
Mershman has been consistent in stating that he would like to make a decision on his future
college prior to the start of the 2008 season. That still appears to be the case and the Pack would
likely be a strong consideration if they decide to offer.
“My top three with offers are Central Michigan, Western Michigan and Ball State and I have a lot
of interest in NC State. I’d really like something to come out of my workout with State. I think if
State offered I’d want to commit pretty quickly.”
With a dozen camps now behind him, Mershman said he was ready to take a break and get away
from football for a while.
“I’m going home,” he said. “I’m taking my time. We’re going to take some time in the
Shenandoahs and then we’re going to go home.”
