WRAL.com: Lowe Talks Hickson, Next Season

Posted Jun 2, 2008

RALEIGH, N.C. -- At a recent Wolfpack caravan, WRAL was on-hand and interviewed several NC State coaches and administrators. Here is a special video feature from WRAL.com with NC State men's basketball coach Sidney Lowe.

"There are guys who probably shouldn't be there and listening maybe to the wrong people and having higher expectations than they should at that time. I think it's a mixed situation."

"I don't think that a lot of the guys realize how tough it is to make the NBA, yet alone be a first-round draft pick."

"I think it's just so difficult to tell. Unless a team tells you we're going to take you with this pick or you get in front of some of these teams and you work out for them... there is really no way of telling."

"The first thing is they like [J.J. Hickson]. They are very impressed with him. They like his work ethic. They know that he's been working out."

"They are really going to see what type of young man he is, and they'll have an even different perspective on it."

"I think it depends on the individual. Just being a first-round pick I don't think is good enough for some guys. If you're a top-10 player and you have to wait a year or two then I think you probably should do that and in the long run it's going to probably work out better for you anyway."

"Some guys are meant to be late first-round picks. Some guys are meant to be top-10 picks."

"No question about it. [Hickson is] a potential top-10 player. Leaving at the right time, everything in the order. He's so talented, even if he's projected now to go late-first, I think when he gets in there and works out for the teams, I think he's going to move up. It's just the way the business is."

"We're going to prepare both ways. We're going to prepare for him coming back. I know in my last conversation with him, he enjoyed being here. If it doesn't look well for him, according to he and his people, he's going to come back. I think it's just something he's going to have to look at."

"It could be a certain team that he really likes that takes him late, but he really likes that team. Maybe there's a superstar on that team that he might like to play with and learn from. So that's another situation where he might go."

"I just left Farnold [Degand] at the office there and he's doing very well... he actually felt good enough today where he said he felt he could run. Obviously he's not, the doc's not going to let him do that and we don't want him to do that, but the fact that he felt that good is encouraging for not just me, but his teamates and our fans."

"We'd like to play at a faster pace. I think that a change in our personnel is going to probably allow us to play a little more uptempo basketball. Being able to move some guys around a little bit... maybe having Farnold and Javy in the backcourt together, and maybe moving Courtney around to three spot. I think we're going to have some players that we can move around and give us a little more quickness in the backcourt."

"I'd rather have players that can just play, where you really don't have to call a lot of plays, a lot of sets. Which means you have to recruit and teach players that have high basketball IQs that just know how to play the game the right way."

"I think we're getting those guys. I think we have some of those guys. More than anything, I just think the speed factor and being able to have multiple ballhandlers in the game will allow us to just change our style a little bit."
