Previewing NC State vs James Madison

NC State will open Regional play tonight as it hosts James Madison at 7pm in first day of the double-elimination event. JMU will be playing in its first regional since 2002, while NC State will be making its sixth straight trip to the tournament.

Notes

While JMU coach Spanky McFarland did not name a starter on Thursday, but did tell reporters that he won't hold anyone back tonight in an effort to pick up a win against the Pack.

State starter Jake Buchanan pitched the final game of the ACC Tournament for the Pack, taking a loss against No. 1 Miami. Buchanan threw 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on five hits and three walks.

James Madison has made six previous appearances in the NCAA tournament, including a 1983 College World Series birth. The Dukes have won just a single game in their three appearances since that World Series run, with a 5-2 win over VCU in the 2002 regional at Columbia.

NC State is 0-2 against James Madison in their career series. The two teams last played in 2001, with the Pack dropping a 5-2 decision.

The Pack last hosted a Regional in 2003, held in Wilson while Doak Field was undergoing renovations. The Pack won the Regional by winning three straight games against VCU, WCU and Le Moyne. State lost in the Super Regionals the next weekend to Miami.
