“We ended up scoring at the end of the game and Darrell Blackman catches the ball and runs down takes his helmet off in the front of the TV camera,” O’Brien recalled. When we had our family dinner after the game, I called Darrell up and had everybody take a look at him so they’d know what he looked like without his helmet and he wouldn’t have to take it off any more.”

Tom O'Brien thought he had the perfect nickname for his new place kicker.

Hauschka's not Polish.
"He told me he's German, so I've got to rethink my thought there," O'Brien said. "I'll have to get another name for him."
Whatever that turns out to be, Hauschka -- whose last name is pronounced Howsh-kuh -- will be a key figure for the Wolfpack when it opens its season against Central Florida on Saturday at 6 p.m. The Massachusetts native will replace three-year starter John Deraney as the man N.C. State turns to for field goals and extra points.
