STAR WATCH
Darris Nichols - Darris Nichols is the only Mountaineer player to lead WVU in scoring in more than one game. He had a game-high 14
points in the season opener against Mount St. Mary’s, a career-high 18 versus Western Michigan and team-high 15
points against Arkansas.
Nichols is the team's top returning player and a very solid point guard. The junior has a ton of playing experience.
KEY NOTES
SERIES RECORD
WVU and NC State are meeting for the 15th time in series play that began in 1946-47. Each team has won seven
times.
The two teams last met in Raleigh in 2004-05 with the Mountaineers defeating the No. 17 Wolfpack, 82-69.
The two schools have met in Charleston once before, an 86-78 WVU win in 1960-61.
WVU is 4-0 against NC State in games played in West Virginia. NC State’s last visit to West Virginia to play the
Mountaineers resulted in an 87-75 WVU win at the WVU Coliseum in 1971-72.
West Virginia is 123-96 against current members of the ACC: Boston College (8-8), Clemson (2-1), Duke (6-17), Florida
State (3-1), Georgia Tech (1-2), Maryland (23-14), Miami (7-6), North Carolina (5-0), NC State (7-7), Virginia (8-8), Virginia
Tech (46-29) and Wake Forest (7-3).
John Beilein is 1-0 all-time against NC State.
WINNING NON-CONFERENCE MARK
West Virginia has posted a winning non-conference regular season record for 14 consecutive seasons.
West Virginia is 5-1 in non-conference action this season.
The last time WVU didn’t post a winning non-league record was 1990-91, when WVU went 4-4 outside of
conference play. West Virginia went 9-4 in non-conference games last season.
WVU has finished with one loss during non-conference play in four different seasons. They were: 1981-82 when West
Virginia went 11-1 out of the Atlantic 10, 1957-58 when WVU lost only to Duke in going 11-1, 1996-97 when theMountaineers
were 7-1, losing the season opener at Minnesota and in 2004-05 when WVU went 10-1 outside the BIG EAST.
WVU has had one perfect non-conference regular season, 10-0 in 1997-98.

This year’s West Virginia team features eight freshmen on the roster with just one returning starter from last year,
senior Frank Young.
WVU had just two players with previous starting experience entering this season, Frank Young and Darris Nichols.
Young leads the Mountaineers with 41 starts, followed by Nichols with eight starts. Joe Alexander, Alex Ruoff and
Rob Summers have each started six games for the Mountaineers. Summers made 41 starts during his two
seasons at Penn State.
BOMBS AWAY
WVU finished the 2005-06 season ranking second nationally in 3-pointers with an average of 10.2 per game.
Last season, West Virginia set a school record with 337 3-point field goals, breaking the previous year’s mark of 319.
Also last season, the Mountaineers surpassed their season three-point field goal attempts mark. WVU attempted
967 3’s, breaking the 2004-05 mark of 885.
West Virginia established a new school and BIG EAST record with 20 three-point field goals against Marquette on
Jan. 14, 2006. The Mountaineers finished the game 20 of 38 from long distance.
PRESEASON BITS
West Virginia was predicted to finish 12th in the BIG EAST preseason coaches’ poll. The Mountaineers were
predicted ahead of Cincinnati, Rutgers, Seton Hall and USF.
In each of John Beilein’s four seasons, the Mountaineers have finished higher than their preseason prediction. Last
season the Mountaineers were predicted fifth, but finished third in earning their first-ever bye in the conference
tournament.
