How would you grade your offensive line?
It's banged up, so it's hard to review it. When I saw banged up, little things. The offensive line, as we speak right now, is five players. Oh, you want names?
The offensive line right now is doing a good job. Now, we're going ones versus twos so they should, but again, I don't know if that's relevant. Our quarterbacks have had time in the passing game, and in the running game there have been some gaping holes. Sometimes the backs make those holes too.
Right now, I'd have to give them a good grade because they are meshing together. I'm pleased with them, I really am. We don't have a lot of missing assignments up there, which is something that happens quite a bit at times in that position.
So right now that is Jon Holt and James Newby at tackle, Leroy Harris at left guard, Curtis Crouch at right guard, and Luke Lathan at center?
You've got it. Boy you're on today. Go play the lottery. Is there a super lottery going on with about 200 million dollars?
What went into your decision to hire Pat Meyer?
He's always kept up with it. Down there in the weightroom he's kept his eyes on the daggone thing, and loyalty, loyalty. I had told him when he came here, knowing that he wanted to be a line coach, that the first opportunity I could put him there and feel comfortable I would do it.
I almost did it whenever I hired coach Barry. I just felt that weightroom was such an important thing. When this opportunity came up I didn't even blink at it. I said, "You're going to be the one."
Had I not done it, I come to find out that he'd be up in the NFL right now as an assistant offensive line coach.
Sharp youngster, there's a lot there to learn, but loyalty. Loyalty is such an important thing, and he's been so loyal to me, and that works both ways.
Who's been the leader in the secondary?
A.J. Davis... it's not even close in leadership. He's practiced hard, he's been a chatterbox, he's been back there in the middle of things. Really, it's a different A.J. I don't mean that in a negative sense, but I've never seen his outgoing personality.
Thoughts on Martrel Brown and his move to defensive end:
It's such a crisis outside. That front seven is a worry for all of us. We've got to just keep them fresh and get as many people who can play whatever positions they can because we're not going to have the type of dominant front we've had the last three out of four years.
We're just moving them all around. We put Demario last week three days strictly at end. We took him away from tackle and then John Bedics turned his ankle a little bit.
We've just got to get as many combinations as we can have because we've got some talent, but they need a million snaps of work.
Martrel has lost some weight and he's worked both inside and outside.
Thoughts on younger players along the defensive line that have caught his attention:
[Ted] Larsen... Larsen is by far the toughest lineman we have on our football team. He's strong, he's tough, he's got a huge heart... he loves to play the game.
[Alan-Michael] Cash is going to be really... he's quick. He's got a lot of quickness to him.
Willie Young, he's a freshman. He's a freshman. He's talented, but he's a freshman.
Audi has caught our eye. Audi Augustin has got it. He's just really a youngster.
John Bedics was coming along but unfortunately he's got a low ankle sprain which isn't the worst of the two. Hopefully we'll get him back by the end of the week.
Quinton Brown... Quinton is someone that when we recruited him we thought he would be an offensive lineman, and he wanted the chance to play defense. He's got a chance. We've got to put some weight on him, but he's got a chance in there.
Any major injuries?
There's not major injuries, but we've just got a lot of little things right now. Today was the 12th practice and yesterday was the first time that we had a two-a-day practice. We had to put our pads on two times yesterday. Last night it was so nice and cool, we had a great practice. But they had to get up this morning and put their clothes back on again.
I told them that's the bad news, but the good news is it was washed. A lot of people when they had to do that they put them up and they dried and they had to put dirty pants on.
We've got to get tougher. We've got to get nasty. We've got to get those nasty pills out again I guess.
