In-State RB is a Major Pack Target

Running back Tyrell Worthington has emerged as a major NC State prospect. We've got the scoop on his top schools.

One of the fastest rising prospects in the state of North Carolina this year is RB Tyrell Worthington from South Central High School in Winterville. Worthington recently checked in at 6-0, 183 pounds and ran a solid 4.56-second 40-yard dash at the Scout.com combine held at Duke University. He also logged a blistering 4.06-second 20-yard shuttle and 28-inch vertical leap.

Last season, Worthington emerged as one of the state's best two-way athletes. On offense, he rushed for 1,129 yards and eight touchdowns while tallying 96 tackles and four interceptions on defense.

Although he certainly has the talents to star on either side of the ball, Worthington is primarily being recruited to play running back. He's recently seen his recruiting stock jump with several schools jumping into the race to land his commitment.

"I've got offers from NC State, ECU and Carolina," said Worthington. "I just got an offer from Virginia Tech and Virginia is supposed to be offering.

While he shied away from naming particular favorites, the rising senior did name four programs he's keeping a close eye on.

"I like East Carolina, NC State, Virginia and Carolina," he said.

NC State, in particular, has been high on Worthington's list for weeks and he talked about what he likes with the Wolfpack program.

"I was talking to the coaches up there and they were telling me how they help you in the classroom," said Worthington. "I went up there for a visit and the facilities were really nice and they were telling us all the new stuff they're getting. I talked to coach Amato and he was just telling me I had an offer and we talked about me playing baseball and football."

The newest team to jump into the race was Virginia Tech and, although he doesn't know as much about the Hokie program just yet, he said he does like the VT offense and will be keeping a close eye on them this fall.

"I like the way Virginia Tech plays offensive-wise," he said. "I was up at the Virginia Tech game when they played NC State."

Worthington is also a baseball standout and that could figure heavily into his decision to play football. He plans to ride recruiting right up to signing day before making a choice on a future college. Worthington will camp at NC State this summer.
