Defensive tackle Gavin Smith was one of the few prospects in the Class of 2006 to give an early verbal to the Pack. After watching NC State for months and hearing from other schools, is Smith opening up the recruiting process again?
"I'm just keeping an open mind and making sure that NC State is the place for me," said Smith. "I'm going to take three official visits this month. This weekend (January 14) I'll be at South Carolina, on January 21 I'm going to Virginia, and I'm going to UNC on January 28. All of those schools have stayed on me pretty hard, and I'm just going to see what they have to offer.
"You could say that I'm a soft verbal to NC State. If I had to make my decision today, I would still end up in Raleigh. I just figure that I owe it to myself to check out some other schools. It really can't hurt anything."
Smith is only considering those three schools, in addition to NC State.
"I know a bit about Virginia and UNC, since they're ACC schools and have been recruiting me pretty much since the beginning. I don't know that much about South Carolina. This weekend will actually be the first time I've been down to the campus and that part of the state."
When will we know for sure if Smith will end up wearing red and white?
"I think after I take that last official visit to North Carolina I'll be ready to announce something. If it's just reaffirming my verbal to NC State, then that's what I'll do. As of now I'm still planning on playing for Coach Amato next year."
