Wolfpack Makes a Move for Virginia Speedster

Pack Pride has the latest on ATH Brent Vinson and his trip to NC State.

Phoebus High School in Hampton, Va has long been considered a pipeline to Virginia Tech. However, the Hokies success hasn't kept NC State away and the Pack continues to go after the region's top talent. This year the Wolfpack has it's eye on two Phoebus standouts in ATH Brent Vinson and LB Matt Wright. Both were in attendance for the Pack's showdown with Virginia Tech and it appears State made up considerable ground with Vinson in particular.

Checking in at 6-2, 180 pounds and running the 40-yard dash in 4.4-seconds, Vinson is a versatile athlete that can beat the opposition at a number of positions, whether it be offense, defense or special teams. Last season he had 29 receptions for 475 yards and eight touchdowns.

On the recruiting front, Vinson has been labeled primarily as an athlete that could end up at receiver, safety, corner back, punt returner or kick returner. He has collected an impressive array of scholarships that includes Virginia Tech, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Syracuse, Michigan State, Ole Miss and Marshall.

NC State had a chance to host Vinson recently and the senior prospect came away impressed.

"That visit went real good," said Vinson. "I like the school and the environment there was really nice. There was kind of a mixup with the coaching staff because they thought I was cheering for Virginia Tech during the game but I was really just cheering for my cousin, Jimmy Williams, whenever he would make a play.

"I like State's offense though. I was watching NC State and Virginia Tech to see how both of them used the passing game and it was obvious State throws the ball more while Tech likes to run it more."

While Virginia and Virginia Tech has been the odds-on favorite to land Vinson, NC State has made a charge and landed themselves on Vinson's top five list for the first time.

"Right now, my top five is Virginia Tech, Virginia, NC State, Maryland and West Virginia," he said. "Virginia and Virginia Tech are still up there at the front and they're close to home but that doesn't mean I'm not looking at other schools. I've got to look at everyone and see how well I fit in and can I adapt to the environment.

Vinson plans to take all of his visits prior to making a decision and added that he'd like to suit up with his current teammate if that's possible when the 2006 season rolls around next year.

"Me and Matt Wright have talked about going to the same school and that's something we'd both like to do if we can."

#12 Brent Vinson
