McGhee: "I am on a Mission"

"I want to make an impact"

StateFans continues the pre-summer interviews with the class of 2004 football signees. Lamarte McGhee says he is close to qualifying and hopes to be in Raleigh on July 4th.

What's left for you to do in high school?

"Just finish up. That's it. Graduation is May 28th."

The last time you spoke with StateFans you were working on your SAT. How is that going for you?

"I have a 900 and I can go to State with that, but I need to pull two As and a B in my core courses to get in. I am close and I will know more after the exams. I am going to take the SAT one more time and if that increases, then the core can be a little less. I am not looking to go to Hargrave. I am trying to get to State on July 4th."

What are you doing to prepare for NC State football?

"Running and lifting. They (other players) tell me not to come up there out of shape. It will make it harder on you."

Have you talked to the new Defensive Coordinator?

"Yes sir. He (Coach Herring) seems alright. I don't think he plays around."

Do you see yourself playing defensive end?

"Yes. Right now they have Manny Lawson at end, but I think he's better as a linebacker. Renaldo Moses was hurt last year and he's still not 100%. They have some other ends that are smaller than me, and I think there is a place there for me."

Who do you think you will be rooming with?

"Pressley (DeMario) or Miller (Gerard)."

What is the one thing you look forward to about NC State?

"Having fun."

What do you want to major in?

"Business Administration."

What did you think of the NFL draft?

"It was kind of surprising. The thing about Philip Rivers being the fourth pick and then being traded for Manning. He should have just been the fourth pick to begin with. I guess it was just a reputation or tradition thing with his brother and father being picked. Jerricho Cotchery being picked in the fourth round was surprising too. I hope he makes it. I saw a lot of pictures of Torry Holt when he played and I guess he was the best in college when he was drafted. He went to the Rams and won a championship in his first year."

What do you want to say to the Wolfpack Nation?

"I am on a mission. I want to make an impact. Tell them to be on the look out for me."
