Swansea (SC) linebacker Johnathan Sutton entered his junior season as one of the top players in the state, but three games in he sustained a serious knee injury.

Sutton tore his ACL, MCL, and meniscus.

"It was hard," said Sutton. "Unbelievable. Everything was going right and then a blow like that... it kind of makes you think about different things. It was a setback, but it made me work harder. It showed me what I really had going for myself."

Nearly a year away from his injury, Sutton says he's close to being back on the field.

"I'll be cleared on July 1st," he stated. "I think I could go now, but coach doesn't want some ninth grader taking me out (laughing)."

What type of a linebacker is Sutton?

"I'm versatile," he said. "I can play all three [linebacker positions]. I can cover, hit the gaps, tackle... all that kind of stuff."

Over 20 schools had offered Sutton, including Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, and LSU among others. However, several were concerned with his knee and backed off, and now he says five programs are currently under consideration.

"I'm looking at Virginia Tech, NC State, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Central Florida," he stated. "Those schools have stuck with me."

Recently he was in Blacksburg visiting the Hokies.

"It was straight. They have a nice staff with good people... nice facilities. It was a real nice place."

On Thursday he made the trip to NC State with one of his high school coaches. NC State was one of the first schools to offer and Sutton had previously visited the Wolfpack.

"It's family at NC State," Sutton said. "They keep everybody close and stay in communication. It's good to see them sticking around after my injury. Most schools dropped off, but they stayed with me and encouraged me to get better.

"I visited again because I wanted to see how they work with their players so if I chose them I'll know how I fit their program."

Sutton hopes to take his next visit this weekend.

"I'm supposed to go to UNC on Saturday," he said. "I'm going to try and get up there, but my mom's work schedule, I'm trying to work around that."

Following his visits he plans on focusing more on his recruitment.

"I'll probably decide by the beginning of the season or the middle of my season," said Sutton. "I want to get back to feeling back 100%. I want to show that I'm as good as I was before I ever got hurt.

"I'm looking for trust and honesty. Some schools just throw stuff at you and expect you to commit. I'm going to pick the school and coaches that I trust."
