The Wolfpack (10-1) scored in the first, but Coastal Carolina (4-6) evened the score in the bottom half. Another exchange saw the Pack score three in the fifth before the Chanticleers chipped away with one in the bottom fifth and two in the seventh to knot it up at 4-4. State finally emerged victorious with a run in the 10th to win 5-4.
Trea Turner had the game-winning hit in a 4-for-6 performance with two runs and one RBI. Turner scored in the first to improve to 15-for-15 on scoring when reaching with less than two outs, but saw his streak snapped on his single in the 10th. Sam Morgan came through as well with a 2-for-4 game including two runs scored.
Ryan Wilkins (2-0) captured the victory with a commanding 3 2/3 innings of hitless ball to finish the game. Grant Sasser stabilized the Pack after a rocky first inning, coming in as relief and shutting out Coastal for 3 2/3 innings.
Turner and Brett Williams led off the game with a pair of singles to put runners on first and second. Turner moved to third on an errant pick off throw, and scored during a groundball double play from the next batter.
Coastal matched with a run in the bottom first. Two walks and a hit batsman loaded with bases with one out before CCU’s Jake Kane singled through the right side to tie it. Sasser struck out the next batter on three pitches to escape the jam.
The Chanticleers threatened to take the lead in the bottom third, after Alex Buccilli’s two-out walk and steal of second. Kane singled up the middle to send Buccilli racing for home, but Williams came up firing from center with an absolute dart to the plate to end the inning.
State pulled away with three runs in the top fifth. Morgan singled as the lead-off, and advanced to second on a bunt. Turner put two on with an infield single. Coastal’s throwing error on a grounder to the right allowed Morgan to score and helped Turner to second. A wild pitch with two outs put both runners in scoring position. Another fielding error scored Turner, and another wild pitch brought Williams in from third to make it 4-1.
Coastal hit a pair of doubles in the bottom half to cut its deficit to 4-2. In the seventh, the Chanticleers loaded the bases with no outs. The first run scored on a single to left. Jake Armstrong fielded a one-hopper from the next batter and gunned down the lead runner at the plate for the first out. Kane walked as the next batter to tie the game 4-4. Wilkins entered there, struck out the first batter he faced, and induced a grounder from the second to end the inning with no more damage.
The score held firm at 4-4 until the top of the 10th, when Turner’s RBI single gave the Pack a 5-4 lead. Morgan got the inning going with a one-out walk. Bryan Adametz was hit by a pitch as the next batter to move him to second. Turner then turned on an 0-1 pitch for the clutch hit to left.
Turner finished the job in the 10th with a tremendous double play. Coastal put a runner on with one-out thanks to a throwing error. The next batter hit what looked to be a line drive single to left, but Turner snagged it with an impressive vertical and fired to first in time for the game-ending double play.
