Richard Howell helped 20th-ranked NC State improve to 3-0 in the ACC for the first time since the 1988-89 season with a pair of home wins as the Wolfpack handed top-ranked Duke its first loss of the year, 84-76, on Saturday and defeated Georgia Tech, 83-70, last Wednesday.
For the week, Howell averaged a double-double of 11 points and 15 rebounds. Against the Blue Devils, Howell recorded the 22nd double-double of his career with 18 rebounds, which tied his career-best in conference play and was one shy of his overall career-high, and 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the floor.
The Marietta, Ga., senior grabbed 14 of his game-high 18 rebounds in the second half, including 12 on the defensive end. Against the Yellow Jackets, Howell again was a force on the boards, registering a game-high 12 rebounds.
Hanlan averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 3.5 steals in his first two ACC road contests. The Almyer, Quebec, freshman had 17 points, eight rebounds, five steals and four assists to key the Eagles to a road win at Virginia Tech on Wednesday. He added 18 points, five rebounds and four assists in Saturday’s road game at Wake Forest and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line.
Hanlan has scored in double figures in eight straight games and 11 of the last 12. He leads ACC freshman and is 15th overall in scoring (13.4 points per game). Hanlan earned his second Rookie of the Week honor after sharing the award with Florida State’s Aaron Thomas on Dec. 24.
