Dakwa Nichols wasn't thrilled when he heard that Tom O'Brien had been dismissed but he's got an upbeat attitude regarding the future of the program now.

Nichols, a Rockingham, North Carolina native and senior at Richmond, said he hasn't spoken with new coach Dave Doeren yet but based on what he has learned about the man he couldn't be more excited about his future with NC State.

"I haven't learned too much about him but from what Coach Bridge told me it sounds like he's a pretty good coach," he said. "At first (when O'Brien was fired) I was disappointed. But everybody has said the new coach that's coming in is supposed to be pretty good. I'm looking forward to working with him."

Does the 5'10, 182-pound running back hope Doeren keeps some of the staff together?

"It's up to him, you know?" he said.

Bridge has spoken with Nichols throughout the process. He passed Nichols' number along to Doeren so the head coach could call him at some point.

Nichols was scheduled to take his official visit weeks ago but when O'Brien was fired those plans changed. Now he will probably take his official visit in January at some point with the other recruits whose visits were changed by recent events.

In the meantime NC State fans don't need to worry about Nichols getting cold feet or looking elsewhere.

"I'm 100% committed to NC State," Nichols said.

Richmond lost to Jack Britt in the third round of the state playoffs. Nichols' final stats on the year: 91 carries, 1,094 yards, 14 touchdowns.
