NOTES: Pack Offense Prolific In Win

Posted Sep 24, 2012

Quintin Payton recorded his second 100-yard game of the season in Saturday's win. Here are some postgame notes from NC State's 52-14 victory over The Citadel.

• Junior CB David Amerson picked off a pass for the third straight game, tying the school record for 16 for his career. NC State is now 10-2 when Amerson records an INT over the last two seasons.

• NC State finished with 282 rushing yards, its highest team total since putting up 297 against Southern Miss. in 2005. The previous season high was last week against South Alabama, 127 yards.

• True freshman Shadrach Thornton got the starting nod at running back, in his first game in a Wolfpack uniform. Thornton becomes the fifth true freshman to play this season: WR Charlie Hegedus, QB Manny Stocker, OT Quincy McKinney and LB M.J. Salahuddin (who has appeared on special teams only).

• Thornton finished the game with 145 yards on 21 carries with 2 TDs. He is the first NC State running back to go over 100 yards this season, the first freshman to gain at least 100 yards in a game since Andre Brown had 248 against Southern Miss. in 2005, and the first freshman to go over 100 yards in his very first collegiate game since Joe McIntosh had 131 yards against Richmond in 1981.

• On the first series, Thornton had 4 carries for 35 yards, including a 19-yard TD run. On the Pack’s second drive, Thornton punched it in from seven yards out for the second NC State touchdown.

• Junior Rashard Smith recorded his first career touchdown off a punt return in the third quarter. His 73 yard return ties as the 13th longest in school history, and is the first for the Pack since T.J. Graham had one in last year’s season opener versus Liberty.

• Sophomore Niklas Sade’s seven extra points have extended his consecutive streak to 57 in a row, moving into third place in the school record book.

• NC State’s 21 points in the first quarter were the most in an opening quarter since also scoring 21 in back-to-back games in the 2nd and 3rd games of the 2009 season. The 42 points in the first half were the most in the first half since scoring 45 against Murray State the second game of the 2009 season. The Pack did score 42 points in the second half in the regular season finale last year against Maryland.

• Sophomore WR Bryan Underwood caught a TD pass for the fourth straight game to open the season. Underwood caught a 20-yard score in the first quarter for the Pack’s third TD.

• Junior WR Quintin Payton went over the century mark for the second time this season (and second time in his career) with 5 catches for 100 yards. In the season opener, Payton finished with a career-high 129 yards against Tennessee.

• The Citadel’s first third down conversion came early in the third quarter. Dating back to the end of the Connecticut game, the Pack had held opponents to 0-16 on the last 16 third down attempts.

• During the Pack’s current three-game winning streak, senior QB Mike Glennon has gone 58-of-88 (65.9%), for 694 yards, 5 TDS and 0 INTs.
