NOTES: Greene Earns The Start

Posted Sep 9, 2012

Sophomore tailback Mustafa Greene earned his first start of the year in the 10-7 win over UConn. Here are some notes from the game.

• The Pack’s 10 points were the least in a victory since beating South Carolina 10-0 in the second game of the 1999 season. In terms of least points in a road win, you have to go all the way to the season opener in 1968 when the Pack won 10-6 at Wake Forest.

• The Pack’s third quarter touchdown was Mike Glennon to Bryan Underwood for a 46 yard scoring pass. Underwood now has three career touchdown receptions, all of at least 33 yards (79 and 33 yards last year at Virginia).

• The Pack defense recorded three interceptions on the day. NC State was 5-0 last season when recording at least three INTs in a game. Earl Wolff recorded his 5th career INT in the first half, then David Amerson picked off his 14th career pass and Brandan Bishop had his 10th each in the second half. Amerson is now two from the school record for career INTS (16).

• NC State’s defense held UConn to just one first down in the first quarter, and the Huskies lone first down came on the last play of the quarter on a roughing the passer call. UConn had just 36 total yards of offense and four punts in the first quarter.

• Sophomore Niklas Sade’s 40 yard field goal in the second quater, broke a scoreless tie and was his first of the season, capping a 15-play, 61 yard drive.

• Sophomore Wil Baumann tied his career-high with nine punts on the day.

• Redshirt sophomore Tyson Chandler earned his first career start, filling in for the injured Rob Crisp at left tackle. Coming into the game, Chandler played a total of just 26 career snaps.

• Redshirt sophomore Mustafa Greene started at running back. It was Greene’s second career start. He missed all of last season due to injury, and started just one game as a true freshman (vs. Clemson - finishing with 12 carries for 26 yards).

• Redshirt junior Forrest West is the only Wolfpack player from Connecticut, from Canton and graduated from Salisbury School. Today was his first time at Rentschler Field, he also recorded his first career sack at NC State.

• Only one true freshman played in last week’s season opener, WR Charlie Hegedus. This week, a second true freshman saw action, LB M.J. Salahuddin played on the Pack’s punt return unit.
