Rondo Gaining in Popularity
Rajon Rondo
Rajon Rondo

Posted Apr 24, 2003

Eastern High’s Rajon Rondo put up some impressive numbers as a junior. The point guard has a sweet list of schools following him this spring.

Rajon Rondo wasn’t happy with the way his season ended. “We lost to Male in triple overtime,” Rondo said. “In the last seconds they gave us a tech for someone throwing something onto the court and that really cost us the game.” The loss came in the regional semis, far earlier than the young man who average 27 a night had anticipated.

The member of the Derrick Smith All-Stars can’t get enough of basketball right now. The next major event he’ll play in will be the tournament of champions in North Carolina. He may lace them up in the state tournament this weekend.

So far, he’s hearing from the likes of Florida, Connecticut, Louisville, Kentucky, Georgia and North Carolina State. Louisville, Indiana and UConn he says have offered and we think NC State is in that mix as well.

But, Rondo’s got a leader or two in mind, even though it’s a little early for him. “Probably IU,” he said. “I like Coach Davis. IU and U of L are like neck and neck right now.”

Indiana came last Friday to check up on him and NC State is coming in next week to see him. Each school is clearly recruiting this gifted shooter as a point guard. “I like the point better. I want to have the ball in my hands at crunchtime.”
