Commit Highlights: Alex Barr

Fayetteville (GA) Starrs Mill OL Barr had a change of heart over the holidays, switching his commitment from Vanderbilt to NC State. Here is your chance to catch Barr in action!

Name: Alex Barr
Hometown: Fayetteville, Georgia
High School: Starrs Mill High School
Position: Offensive Lineman
Vitals: 6'7/285

Commit Story: Alex Barr switched his commitment from Vanderbilt to NC State on Christmas Eve, a few days after officially visiting the Wolfpack.

"I have changed my commitment to NC State," said Barr. "I called coach Reed and told him first and then I called coach O'Brien to let him know as well. Coach O'Brien was happy about it... he said he'll be seeing me again in April for the Spring Game.

"I've played guard for my high school, but coach Horton said I can play guard or tackle at NC State. We'll see once I get there."

Barr committed to Vanderbilt back in October but re-evaulated his options after Commodore head coach Robbie Caldwell resigned following the 2010 season.

"NC State got a punter from my school a couple of years ago but he's no longer there," said Barr. "Coach Reed came by the school in the spring like a normal visit, but I didn't hear much from them until after coach Caldwell was fired at Vanderbilt.

"What happened was coach Caldwell told the NC State coaches I was their top offensive line commitment and it opened the door for them to recruit me harder. I guess you can say coach Caldwell put in a good word for me. I went on my visit to NC State and loved it. I came home and thought about it for a few days and made my final decision."

Checking in at 6-foot-7 and 280 pounds, Barr is an athletic offensive lineman with plenty of physical upside. He has been timed as low as 5.1 in the 40-yard dash (Ohio State camp), benches 300 pounds, and squats 465 pounds. Barr also carries a 3.65 GPA in the classroom and scored a 23 on his ACT.

What led to Barr picking NC State?

"It was the way I meshed with everyone on the official visit, and with the whole coaching dilemma at Vanderbilt I knew it was the right decision for me," said Barr. "I told coach Hand from Vanderbilt two days ago that I was going to NC State. I'm done with my recruitment now... happy I'm headed to NC State."
